The history of Norman Rockwell and how his work affected American culture
Overview
The Wagnalls Memorial Foundation is proud to offer an educational lecture series centered on Norman Rockwell, one of the most famous American painters and illustrators of all times. The in-person event will be held in conjunction with the Norman Rockwell Museum traveling exhibition, scheduled to be on display at the Wagnalls Memorial Library from April through June of 2021. The lecture series will be videotaped and published on our website for streaming enjoyment at a later date.

Traditional Values
Led by a local art education professional, this lecture provides attendees with a background on the life of Norman Rockwell while examining the role his paintings and illustrations played in capturing and examining America’s culture.
Lecture topics include:
- The biography of Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) – Did you know Normal Rockwell served as an art director for Boy’s Life, the official publication of the Boy Scouts of America, when he was a teenager?
- A look at Rockwell’s Saturday Evening Post covers– His most recognizable and iconic artwork produced for nearly 50 years!
- Traditional values– Rockwell was a master at finding extraordinary value in friends and family’s ordinary gatherings.
- A discussion of the social issues Rockwell explored– Rockwell used his talents and observations to shine a light on challenging social justice issues.

Related Activities: Norman Rockwell Traveling Museum Exhibit
The Wagnalls Memorial Foundation will host the Norman Rockwell traveling museum exhibition in April, May, and June of 2021. The exhibition will feature some of Rockwell’s most famous pieces of original artwork from the 1940s that centered around life on the homefront during World War II. Click below for details.
